Pests on Vancouver Island
Vancouver Island is plagued by a number of different pests thanks to its abundant plant life and mild climate. In Victoria especially harmful pests such as aphids, beetle larvae and spider mites can cause real issues. The city has also recently been forced to contend with invasive species in the form of winter moths, Asian long-horned beetles, apple maggots, cereal leaf beetles, emerald ash borers, European brown garden snails, gypsy moths, Japanese beetles, oriental fruit moths, and swede midges.
Recently, the long dry summers that have been experienced on Vancouver Island have made conditions perfect for wasps. Conditions have also been ripe for termites and rodents such as mice and rats that flourish in the warmer months before moving into buildings when the mercury begins to fall, causing untold issues for both homes and businesses.
Carpenter Ants
Mild climate conditions combined with moist wooded areas for nesting make carpenter ants a common pest in Victoria, British Columbia. Distinctly larger than most other ant species, they can reach sizes of up to half an inch. However, they enter homes and buildings for the same reason as most ants: to forage for food.
Carpenter ants can survive on various resources, including living and dead insects, as well as plant juices. As a result, these pests are particularly drawn to sweet foods found in pantries, which can lead them indoors. Once they’ve found a dependable food source, they may establish a ‘satellite nest,’ or one without a queen, within the structure.
Outdoors, these ants seek out moist environment or decayed wood as places to start a colony. When indoors, they prefer voids that offer access to wood and moisture. Ideal nesting locations include behind insulations, in wall voids, in ceiling, soffits, leaky pipes, porches, windowsills, and hollow doors. The moniker ‘carpenter ant’ arises from their remarkable ability to burrow through wooden materials using their powerful mandibles, creating hollowed-out nesting areas. This nest-building characteristic can mislead property owners to believe they have termites when carpenter ants are the culprits attacking Victoria buildings. It is worth noting that unlike termites, carpenter ants don’t consume wood for food. The damage they cause typically presents a smoother, sandpaper-like finish.
Given that their nests can cause structural damage and be extensive in nature, it’s best to work with a pest control company in Victoria, B.C., to deal with these pests effectively. At Orkin Canada, you can count on our team of professionals to help.
