Home / The Orkin Blog / Concert Pest Management 101: What You Need To Consider For A Pest-Free Concert Experience

Attending a concert is an exhilarating experience, but the presence of pests can quickly transform enjoyment into discomfort. Whether you are going to a crowded outdoor festival or an intimate concert hall, pests can pose a challenge that may distract you from the excitement of the event.

Using our industry leading expertise, we’ve put together a few simple ways you can enjoy your next concert experience without having to worry about pest issues.

What You Need To Consider When Planning For Your Next Concert

Before You Attend The Concert

Choose the Right Venue

Before purchasing tickets, look into the venue’s pest control history. Some locations are more prone to infestations than others. Outdoor venues tend to have a higher presence of pests like mosquitoes and ticks.

Check the Weather

Use weather apps to check for alerts regarding temperature and humidity. Higher temperatures and humidity can increase insect activity, especially mosquitoes and midges. If rain is expected, be aware that it can wash away treatments and make venues vulnerable to pest activity. Bring waterproof gear if necessary.

Educate Yourself

Familiarize yourself with local insects that are prevalent in the area where the concert is taking place. Understanding their behaviours can help you take better precautions. If you’re travelling for the concert, research local pest trends, ratings, preventive measures and recommendations.

Dress Appropriately

Insects like mosquitoes are attracted to dark colours. Light colours make it harder for them to see you. Loose clothing can reduce skin exposure, making it harder for pests to bite. Wear clothing that covers most parts of the body – long sleeves and pants.

Be Vigilant

If you plan on staying at hotels or other accommodations, it is important that you remain vigilant to ensure you are protecting yourself from hitchhiking bed bugs. The easiest and most effective way to prevent  bed bugs from hitching a ride home with you is by travelling light, bring only an overnight bag, ensure that there is no infestation in your guest room – briefly inspect the room for signs of bed bugs, check bedsheets, headboard for dark spots and actual bed bugs, place your overnight bag on luggage stand, not on the floor or on bed.

Use Insect Repellent

Look for Health Canada approved repellents that contain DEET or picaridin, which are proven to be effective against a variety of insect pests. Apply repellent as per label instructions before arriving, and reapply according to the product instructions, especially if you’re sweating or in a heavily infested area.

Avoid Scented Products

Opt for unscented lotions, shampoos, and deodorants before heading out. The sweeter the scent, the more likely it is to attract bees and wasps. If you prefer to use scents, consider natural essential oils that are less attractive to insects, such as peppermint or tea tree oil.

When You Are At The Concert Venue

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is crucial for overall health, especially in hot weather. Sweet beverages can attract bees and other insects, so opt for plain water or non-sweetened drinks.

Be Mindful of Food

If you’re bringing snacks, opt for items that are less likely to attract pests, like nuts or granola bars, and keep them sealed. Consume food in designated eating areas to minimize the attraction of pests to your seating area.

Keep Your Area Clean

Bring a small bag for your trash and dispose of it in proper receptacles. Leaving trash behind can create a breeding ground for pests. Remind your friends to keep their areas clean as well since a clean venue benefits everyone.

Avoid Sitting on the Ground

If seating is limited, bring a blanket or chair. Sitting directly on the ground can expose you to ticks, ants and other crawling pests. Do not place bags and items on the ground if possible, to prevent pests from crawling into them.

Check for Pests Before Leaving

Before leaving an outdoor concert, do a quick check for ticks and other pests, especially in hard-to-see areas like behind the knees and under arms. For indoor venues, check your bags and jackets for any insects such as bed bugs that might have hitched a ride.

Stay Alert

Pay attention to the environment. If you notice swarms of insects, consider moving to a different area or finding indoor spaces if available. Consider bringing a small, portable fan. The airflow can deter flying insects from getting too close.

If the concert is in a wooded area, be especially cautious of ticks. Stick to the paths and avoid tall grass and shrubbery.

By following these tips, you can enhance your concert experience and enjoy the music without the distraction of pests.
