Identification

  • Vary in size depending on species and sex; usually about 3 mm in length prior to feeding
  • Are generally reddish-brown in colour
  • Have a total of 8 visible legs as adults
  • Can be leathery (soft ticks) or hard (hard ticks)

Habitat and Behaviour

  • Are ectoparasites of mammals, birds, and reptiles
  • Feed on blood
  • Can live without attachment or feeding from a host for very long periods of time
  • Require moisture to survive
  • Are extremely efficient vectors of disease (e.g. Lyme disease)

Lifecycle

  • Undergo 4 stages in their development  (egg, larva, nymph, adult)
  • Females can lay upwards of 5,000 eggs
  • Lay eggs in small cracks/crevices
  • Have six-legged larvae that are able to survive for several months without feeding
  • Complete their lifecycle in as few as a couple of months
