Ticks (Order Acarina: Suborder Ixodida)

Identification
- Vary in size depending on species and sex; usually about 3 mm in length prior to feeding
- Are generally reddish-brown in colour
- Have a total of 8 visible legs as adults
- Can be leathery (soft ticks) or hard (hard ticks)
Habitat and Behaviour
- Are ectoparasites of mammals, birds, and reptiles
- Feed on blood
- Can live without attachment or feeding from a host for very long periods of time
- Require moisture to survive
- Are extremely efficient vectors of disease (e.g. Lyme disease)
Lifecycle
- Undergo 4 stages in their development (egg, larva, nymph, adult)
- Females can lay upwards of 5,000 eggs
- Lay eggs in small cracks/crevices
- Have six-legged larvae that are able to survive for several months without feeding
- Complete their lifecycle in as few as a couple of months
