Identification
- Is shiny black/brown in color
- Size can range between 25 and 38 mm
- Has functional wings that cover its abdomen
- Is a great flyer that is attracted to light
Habitat and Behaviour
- Occurs mainly outdoors and prefers a warm, moist climate
- Generally seeks out dark, protected, moist areas indoors
- Relies heavily on moisture to survive; it tends to lose moisture very quickly through its cuticle
- Is generally introduced into structures as its prefers a warmer climate
- Feeds on all types of food
- Has been associated with several human allergens; it can evoke a response from asthmatics
Lifecycle
- Undergoes gradual metamorphosis (egg, nymph, adult)
- Nymphs are smaller versions of the adults, and will go through several molts until fully grown
- Female egg capsule (ootheca) is generally attached to a surface a day after it is formed
- Female produces an average of 10 oothecae; each ootheca contains an average of 20 eggs
- Lifecycle, from egg to adult, is greatly dependant on temperature, and averages 600 days
- Lifespan averages approximately 200 days
