Clean out the pests

April showers might bring May flowers, but spring is also the season for pests. Just as we tend to hibernate through the winter and become active once warm weather hits, pests too start to emerge, looking for food, water and shelter in your home. Coincidentally, spring cleaning is the perfect pest antidote.
"Spring cleaning provides a great opportunity to prevent pest problems before they occur," said Dan Dawson, manager of marketing for Orkin PCO Services. "Pests that have been dormant during the cold months can become more active with warmer temperatures."
Warm weather pests, such as cockroaches, ants and spiders present potential health risks for you and your family by carrying harmful bacteria, or from their bites and stings. So, when spring cleaning, think about how you can C.L.E.A.N. out pests, too, as follows:
C: Clear clutter where pests might hide out. Cockroaches especially like living in cardboard boxes and feeding off the glue that holds them together.
L: Leftover food can be a pest treat. Keep food in tightly sealed containers to reduce odours, and pick up pet food dishes at night.
E: Eliminate crumbs from countertops by wiping down your kitchen. Sweep and mop floors regularly to remove debris.
A: Assess the exterior of your home, looking for cracks and crevices. Seal any openings with weather-resistant sealant so pests can't get through.
N: Notice when trash piles up and remove garbage. Keep tight lids on all trash cans.
